When the world on a child's nose grows increasingly heavy, when "little glasses" become the norm on campus, how to safeguard the clear "window to the soul" has become a common anxiety for countless families. In Dongguan, there is a doctor who, after more than two decades of clinical practice in ophthalmology, has inscribed "protecting the true future of children's eyes" into his medical career. From myopia prevention and control to the diagnosis and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia, and to the precise fitting of corneal contact lenses, he is Fu Chengbin, Chief Physician and Director of the Optometry and Pediatric Ophthalmology Department at Dongguan Aier Eye Hospital. With expertise and patience, he quietly safeguards the clear vision of children.

The "Gatekeeper" Deeply Rooted in the Field of Optometry

Mr. Fu Chengbin graduated from the Optometry and Ophthalmology program of Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University. For over 20 years, he has been dedicated to clinical practice, focusing on the prevention and control of myopia in adolescents and children, the diagnosis and treatment of strabismus and amblyopia, and other optometric and pediatric ophthalmic areas. He has developed a solid professional foundation and keen clinical judgment.

As a discipline leader, he holds multiple positions, serving as a standing committee member in several professional societies, including the Strabismus and Amblyopia Professional Committee of the Guangdong Optometric Association and the Visual Rehabilitation Professional Committee. He is also a member of the International Association of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (IAOA) Asia Chapter and the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE), and serves as the Leader of the Optometry and Strabismus Professional Group for Aier Eye Hospital's Guangdong Region and a member of the Pan-Pearl River Delta Expert Committee. These numerous academic appointments reflect the high level of recognition his professional expertise has earned within the industry.

In clinical practice, he has unique expertise and strives for excellence: He is highly skilled in the precise fitting of corneal contact lenses and the diagnosis and treatment of complex strabismus, proficient in fitting various types of contact lenses, including orthokeratology lenses, multifocal soft lenses, RGP lenses, and scleral lenses. The personalized myopia prevention and control strategies he leads integrate cutting-edge optical technology with ocular biometric parameters, providing precise intervention for children and adolescents with different refractive conditions. For complex strabismus cases, he has innovatively adopted a "personalized strabismus correction surgery + postoperative visual training" model, significantly improving the success rate of alignment and the patient's visual quality.

On the research front, he insists on integrating clinical practice with scientific research, leading several provincial and municipal research projects and publishing over ten academic papers in domestic and international journals. He nourishes scientific innovation with clinical practice and, in turn, advances clinical diagnosis and treatment with research findings, continuously promoting the iterative upgrading of myopia prevention and control technologies in the region.

Building a "Dream Team" for Optometry in Dongguan

"One person travels fast, but a group travels far. Only a capable team can protect the light of more children." As the department head, Director Fu Chengbin places great emphasis on building a talent pipeline, meticulously assembling a high-education, high-skill, high-quality "team of masters and doctors," including medical doctors and ophthalmology masters, covering diverse fields such as optometry, ophthalmology, and child development, laying a solid talent foundation for precise diagnosis and treatment.

Under his leadership, the department has established a "clinical-teaching-research" trinity training model, regularly conducting multidisciplinary consultations on difficult cases, research salons, and international academic exchanges, allowing the team to refine their medical skills through the collision of ideas. The team focuses on cutting-edge topics such as the mechanisms of myopia prevention and control, clinical efficacy evaluation of defocus lenses, and precise fitting of orthokeratology lenses. Numerous achievements have been presented at domestic and international academic platforms, receiving widespread acclaim within the industry.

Relying on the professional team and internationally synchronized visual function examination equipment and amblyopia training systems, the department has built a comprehensive, full-cycle eye health service system for children, integrating screening, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation. Over 11 years, it has served more than 360,000 visits, with annual outpatient volume consistently ranking among the top in the region, establishing itself as an authoritative benchmark for adolescent myopia prevention and pediatric ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment in Dongguan and even the Greater Bay Area, earning the trust and reputation of thousands of families through its strength.

Building an Innovative "Myopia Management" System

Faced with the difficulty parents have in distinguishing true from false among the numerous complex myopia prevention and control methods on the market, Director Fu Chengbin consistently adheres to scientific, standardized, evidence-based, and practical principles, helping parents clarify their approach to prevention and control.

He clearly articulates core clinical guidelines: Focus on environmental risk factors; prioritize optical methods to correct refractive errors. Optical methods such as myopia control glasses, orthokeratology lenses, multifocal soft lenses, and defocus RGP lenses can meet the myopia prevention and control needs of most children. Based on optical correction, combined with the child's actual situation, low-concentration atropine eye drops may sometimes be used to enhance efficacy. Additionally, if visual function abnormalities are present, visual training is required to achieve the best myopia prevention and control effect.

To make myopia prevention and control more systematic and practical, Director Fu Chengbin has actively promoted the establishment of a "5P Myopia Prevention and Control System" within the department. In 2024, they upgraded the post-diagnosis home eye health management system, using a three-level prevention and control closed-loop to achieve full lifecycle eye health management, from early childhood eye development monitoring, adolescent myopia prevention and control, to monitoring of myopia complications in middle-aged and older adults. He strongly advocates the "Four Checks and One Filing" approach to myopia management, relying on refractive development files to achieve early screening, early detection, and early intervention, curbing the onset and progression of myopia at the source.

At the same time, he has taken the lead in forming a "Myopia Prevention and Control Master's and Doctor's Assistance Team." Besides providing high-quality diagnostic and treatment services, the team is active in various science popularization activities on campuses and in communities, truly planting the seeds of scientific eye care in every family. With professional strength, they promote the standardization and popularization of myopia prevention and control. "Only by helping parents break the information gap and choosing scientific, legitimate myopia prevention and control methods for their children can we protect their clear vision!"

Building an Innovative "Myopia Management" System

During weekends or holidays, long queues often form outside Director Fu Chengbin's consultation room, leaving him with almost no time to rest. "Choosing optometry work means ceding rest time to the children." This simple statement is a true portrayal of his twenty years of medical practice.

"Protecting every 'true future of children's eyes' has been my unchanged original aspiration for over twenty years in medicine." From a young doctor to becoming a department head, from personal dedication to leading a team, Fu Chengbin never stops moving forward on the path of myopia prevention and control. With expertise and patience, he has supported a clear horizon of vision for countless children.
