Winter vacation countdown! Don't miss these 4 key points before school starts, and make sure to do one thing!

DATE:2026-02-27   HITS:61

The days of the bustling holiday are running out; meanwhile, the joyful winter vacation is also coming to a close, and there are only a few short days left before the children return to school.

How did your child spend the Spring Festival holiday?

When visiting relatives and friends, children often keep electronic products in their hands. During leisure time at home, they spend long hours watching TV. Occasionally, when catching up on missed classes, they use their eyes closely. Coupled with the reduction of outdoor activities during the Spring Festival and a diet biased towards greasy and sweet foods, children's eyes have unknowingly borne too much burden.

Does your child frequently rub their eyes, squint when looking at objects, or unconsciously lean in closer to see things? Don't take it lightly, as this could be a "warning signal" from their vision.

Survey shows

During the Spring Festival and winter vacation, children's eye habits generally deteriorate. Issues such as unrestrained use of electronic products, prolonged close-range eye use, and insufficient outdoor activities are prominent. Some primary and secondary school students have experienced a decline in vision during the holidays, and for some who are already nearsighted, their vision has significantly worsened.

Therefore, Director Fuchengbin from the Department of Optometry at Dongguan Aier Eye Hospital reminds you: School is about to start, and children will soon face heavy classroom learning and homework, which will significantly increase their eye strain. If you ignore vision problems at this time, myopia may accelerate. Take advantage of the free time before school starts to take your child for a comprehensive vision examination, to ensure their vision health for the new semester.

When it comes to vision examination, these four key points cannot be overlooked, and one thing must be done!

Check hyperopia reserve

Before a child develops myopia, it is important to assess their hyperopia reserve. We need to conduct regular checks to understand whether the child's hyperopia reserve is sufficient.

Check for true or false myopia

When it is first discovered that a child has difficulty seeing clearly, it is necessary to check whether the condition is true or false myopia. If the glasses are incorrectly prescribed, it may lead to the child's myopia becoming permanent. To distinguish between true and false myopia, it is necessary to conduct a dilated eye exam to see if the child's vision remains nearsighted. Only then can a definitive diagnosis be made.

The risk of developing high myopia

When a child has already developed myopia, it is important to assess the risk of becoming highly myopic. If a child has already developed myopia and exhibits any of the following conditions: family members with high myopia, onset of myopia before school age, or rapid increase in myopia degree, special attention should be paid, as the child may be at high risk of becoming highly myopic. Scientific myopia control measures should be taken to prevent the child from developing into a high-risk group of high myopia.

Check for complications of high myopia

When a child already has high myopia, regular fundus examinations should be conducted to screen for complications related to high myopia, such as glaucoma and retinal detachment. Because the eyeball of people with high myopia is like a balloon that has been blown up, and the retina is similar to the balloon wall that becomes very thin due to compression, it is prone to serious ocular complications such as retinal detachment. If treatment is not timely, it can lead to blindness.

Establish refractive development records

How should we manage children's vision? We need to visit a professional ophthalmological medical institution to establish a personalized "refractive development file" for the child, issue an "identity card" for the child's eyes, conduct regular checks to track the child's vision dynamics, and provide important basis for doctors to take personalized prevention and control measures.

The family is the main battlefield for myopia prevention and control, and parents are the "gatekeepers" of their children's visual health. Please remember the "four checks and one record-keeping" for pre-school vision screening, help your child develop good eye habits, reasonably control the use of electronic products, engage in more outdoor activities, and let your child greet the arrival of the new semester with clear vision and full energy, safeguarding their "bright" future.
